PUMA Level Up Pack: Future 9 & Ultra Nitro 7

There is a deliberate tension in putting a low-resolution graphic on a high-performance football boot. Modern boot design is obsessed with smooth aerodynamics, seamless transitions and aggressive, sweeping lines. Pixel art is jagged, blocky and primitive.

With the limited-edition Level Up pack, PUMA uses that exact contradiction to open its 2026/27 season.

Rejecting the Traditional Template

Most early-season soccer cleats play it safe with basic white, black, or neon colors. PUMA is taking a different approach. Their new Ultra Nitro 7 and Future 9 boots are designed to look like retro 1980s arcade games.

Crucially, PUMA avoids slapping the same graphic on two different silhouettes. The collection works because it splits the gaming concept to match each boot’s identity.

The Future 9: Reading the Pitch Through an Interface

The Future 9 relies on literal user-interface motifs. Set against a luminous light blue base with sharp pink graphics, the upper features recognisable gaming mechanics. Pixelated health bars run along the flank. Tiny heart meters sit near the heel. Retro D-pad details are built into the midfoot structure.

The Future is PUMA’s creative, playmaking silo, making the interface graphics a logical fit. The design treats the boot as a control pad, and the pitch as a screen to be read.

The Ultra Nitro 7: Pure Kinetic Glitch

The Ultra Nitro 7 drops the UI symbols for pure kinetic noise. Built for speed, its base colour is a blinding electric yellow, interrupted by multi-coloured, 8-bit pixel clusters that trail along the lateral edge and bleed into the soleplate.

The execution here feels less like a careful interface and more like an arcade screen glitching at high speed. Even the standard leaping cat logo on the toe box has been replaced by a blocky, pixelated version. A quiet detail that anchors the loud aesthetic.

Digital Nostalgia as Pitch Culture

Underneath the graphics, both boots retain their standard inline specifications. Level Up is strictly a visual update.

But it highlights a continuing shift in boot culture. Brands are moving away from traditional football aesthetics stripes, colour-blocking, simple metallic accents and looking outward toward fashion, music and digital nostalgia.

The Level Up pack will only appear briefly on pitch, worn by a select group of PUMA athletes. It will not replace the brand’s core seasonal colourways. As a short-run intervention, however, it proves that a highly engineered modern boot sometimes looks best when it refuses to take itself seriously.
